Can cats learn to fetch?

The answer may surprise you.

While most cats aren’t exactly known for their obedience, some clever kitties have been known to pick up a few tricks. Fetching is one of those tricks.

So, can cats learn to fetch? It turns out that they can – with a little bit of patience and training on your part.

How long does it take to teach a cat to fetch?

Start by teaching your cat to “sit.” This will be the foundation for all future tricks.

Establish a daily routine that integrates commands, rewards, and training to ease your cat into more complex commands. The amount of work you put in will determine how quickly your cat learns to fetch!

What is the best cat breed to train?

Most cats are pretty easy to train, especially if you use positive reinforcement techniques like treats or praise.

However, some breeds are definitely more independent than others. Here are a few of the easiest (and most popular) cat breeds to train:

Siamese: Siamese cats are very intelligent and therefore easy to train. They are also very social creatures, so they enjoy interacting with their human companions.

Persian: Persians are another relatively easy breed to train. They are often quite affectionate and gentle, which makes them responsive to positive reinforcement techniques.

Siamese mix: As you might expect, Siamese mixes tend to be fairly easy to train as well. They often inherit the intelligence and social nature of their Siamese ancestors, making them quick learners.

British Shorthair: British Shorthairs are known for being independent and sometimes even stubborn, but they are still relatively easy to train compared to other breeds. They tend to be food motivated, so using treats as a reward can be especially effective.

However, shelter cats that are mixed breeds definitely hold their own.

  1. Thaaaank you! I recently rescued a kitten, she was out in the snow shivering 😥😥 I just got her to sit and high five without the click. I'm trying to teach her how to sit, stay and move (because she loves to lay down on my pillow, and she doesn't move when it's bed time, 🤣🤣🤣). My problem is I give her using Churu, she didn't like any of dry treats I tried, which one do you use or recommend? Some commands are hard to teach with Churus. Other question is, I feel she obey only if I have the treats on my hand, lol. She looks me, she knows what the commands means, but she is: okay you don't have treats I won't obey! 🤣🤣🤣
